The Law, the Covenants, and the Sabbath: What Still Applies Today?
INTRODUCTION
Many Christians agree that Jesus brought a New Covenant, but they disagree on what that means for the law - especially the Sabbath. Some say the law was abolished. Others say only parts of it ended. Still others say the Sabbath was ceremonial and no longer binding. But Scripture gives us a clear, balanced picture. Today we will explore:
• The difference between the Mosaic Law and the New Covenant
• Why the Ten Commandments are different from the ceremonial laws
• Why the Sabbath remains binding under the New Covenant
• How the New Covenant transforms how we keep the Sabbath
Let's allow the Word of God to speak clearly.
1. THE MOSAIC LAW AND THE OLD COVENANT
A. The Old Covenant was a formal agreement with Israel
Exodus 19:5-8: Israel promised obedience; God promised blessing. This covenant was national, conditional, and temporary.
B. The Old Covenant contained multiple categories of law
• Moral law - the Ten Commandments
• Ceremonial law - sacrifices, priesthood, rituals
• Civil law - national regulations for Israel
These were all part of the covenant package given at Sinai.
C. The Old Covenant was temporary
Hebrews 8:13 - "What is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away."
The covenant system - not God's eternal moral principles - was what became obsolete.
2. THE NEW COVENANT AND THE LAW WRITTEN ON THE HEART
A. The New Covenant was promised long before Jesus
Jeremiah 31:31-33: God writes His law on the heart - not abolishes it.
B. Jesus fulfills the ceremonial system Hebrews 10:1-10
The sacrifices were shadows pointing to Christ. When the reality came, the shadows ended.
C. Jesus deepens the moral law Matthew 5:17-19
He did not abolish the law - He magnified it. He moved it from tablets of stone to the tablets of the heart.
D. Nine of the Ten Commandments are repeated in the New Testament
The only one not repeated verbatim is the Sabbath - but it is affirmed through:
• Creation
• Jesus' example
• Jesus' prophecy (Matt. 24:20)
• Hebrews 4:9
The New Covenant does not erase the Sabbath - it elevates it.
3. WHY THE SABBATH REMAINS BINDING UNDER THE NEW COVENANT
A. The Sabbath predates the Old Covenant
Genesis 2:1-3: God blessed and sanctified the seventh day before sin, before Israel, before Moses. This makes the Sabbath a creation ordinance, not a Jewish ordinance.
B. The Sabbath is part of God's moral law Exodus 20:8-11
• It is rooted in creation, not ceremonies.
• It stands alongside commandments against murder, adultery, and idolatry.
C. The Sabbath is a covenant sign of sanctification
Exodus 31:16-17: It is a sign of relationship - not nationality.
D. Jesus expected His followers to keep the Sabbath after His resurrection
Matthew 24:20: This prophecy points to A.D. 70 - decades after the cross.
E. Hebrews 4 teaches a continuing Sabbath rest
Hebrews 4:9 - "There remains therefore a Sabbath rest for the people of God." The Greek word sabbatismos means literal Sabbath-keeping. The New Covenant does not abolish the Sabbath - it restores its true meaning.
4. WHAT CHANGED IN THE NEW COVENANT?
A. The Sabbath is no longer kept with Pharisaic restrictions
Jesus removed burdens, not blessings.
B. The Sabbath is no longer enforced by civil penalties
Civil law ended with Israel's theocracy.
C. The Sabbath becomes relational, not ritualistic
We keep it because we love God - not to earn salvation.
D. The Sabbath points to Christ as Creator and Redeemer
Creation: Exodus 20; Redemption: Deuteronomy 5; New Creation: Revelation 14:7
The Sabbath is a weekly reminder of who God is and who we are in Him.
5. PRACTICAL APPLICATION
A. The Sabbath reminds us who God is Creator, Redeemer, Sanctifier.
B. The Sabbath restores our identity. We are not defined by work, stress, or performance.
C. The Sabbath is a weekly taste of eternity A sign of the world to come.
D. The Sabbath is a gift, not a burden
Mark 2:27 -"The Sabbath was made for man." The Sabbath is God's weekly invitation to rest in His love.
CONCLUSION
The Mosaic Law ended. The ceremonial system ended. The Old Covenant ended. But God's moral law - including the Sabbath - continues under the New Covenant, written on the heart, empowered by the Spirit, and centered in Christ. The Sabbath is not a shadow of sacrifices. It is a creation blessing. A covenant sign.A spiritual rest.A weekly reminder that Jesus is Lord.
APPEAL
"Lord, write Your law on my heart. Teach me to delight in Your Sabbath. Help me walk in the freedom and rest of the New Covenant."
